Welcome
to the southern continent

D'Sanctine Weyr takes place in 10th Pass Pern. AIVAS was never discovered, and Thread still falls on the planet. Overpopulating causes stress in the Weyrs, which leads to the foundation of a new southern Weyr, dubbed D'Sanctine. A Hold is founded to support the Weyr, titled Sanctis Hold. Old riders and prospective candidates flock to the new Weyr for a chance at an easier, less crowded life, but the hatching of dragons of strange colors has left the more conservative holds and Weyrs in the north uneasy. The political atmosphere is tense as a drawn bowstring-- it is only a matter of time before the arrow is loosed.

Current Events
what's happening!

Summer - P10 T16

5/4/17 - Mornings have been foggy thanks to warm days and cool evenings. There was recently a routine Threadfall that only resulted in a few injuries and no fatalities. The weyrfolk are gathering and brewing up some vats of numbweed to resupply, so a section of the Weyr is going to be awfully stinky for a few days.

4/1/17 - Fall has arrived, and with it pleasant breezes and the occasional storm. It's by no means cold, but it isn't as impossibly hot and humid as summer gets.

Candidates. Valenth spoke gently, her mind a tentative presence at the edge of her student's thinking. The green radiated a feeling of calm and contentment. Join Mine in the classroom for a lesson. When you are finished, enjoy the day. It is a good day for being outside. She advised, and was following her own advice. It was just after the breakfast hour, and this morning found Valenth sprawled once more in the grass, baring her dark hued belly to the warmth of the sun. The sky was filled with large puffy clouds that kept the caress of the day from being uncomfortable, breaking it now and then with cool shade accompanied by mild breezes.

Maybe it is a good day for flying too... The green dragon trailed off playfully, and offered a single image of the great shadows of her wings spreading, and a blurred figure in candidate knots astride her shoulders.

You are an awful tease, my love. Half of the class will be late from sleeping in, and the other half will duck out early to fly with you. M'ari scolded her with amusement as he quickly ran through the hides on his desk as his students filed in to take their seats at their desks. When all, or at least most, had made an appearance he'd look up with a smile.

"Good morning, my friends! I hope all is well. I understand that my dear Valenth is trying to lure you away from the sweet promise of a nice fulfilling lecture." That smile would turn into a grin, and he gave the door of the classroom a good lingering look as though he were considering it himself. "So for the sake of mercy, shall we try to make this quick?"

"Today I'd like to go over some dragonlore, and basic knowledge with you. Some of you are weyrbred, and interacting with a dragon for you is as every day as combing your hair. For some of you, perhaps the only dragons you have really spoken with in person are my Valenth, blue Cindath, and perhaps a quick word to our Queens?" He paused a moment to give his class a look over. There was a hatching a few sevendays away. Experience with dragons would take on a whole new importance the day the eggs cracked. "And with eggs on the sands, a rising number of new faces who may not yet feel comfortable with them, yes?"

"So consider this a crash course! In both interacting with them, and learning how to live alongside them. Some good information to know about our flying friends. Now..." He turned and drew a dragons silhouette with wings outstretched on the large slate behind him. "Dragons come in a variety of colors, obviously. One need only look at the rim on a sunny day if they wanted to see a rainbow. Each color has its own tasks its uniquely suited for, and some physical and personality traits that are more common than others."

"One type of dragon in particular is known for being one of the fastest, and one of the most flexible in the composition of a thread-fighting wing. Some have the endurance to last entire threadfalls. Their small size, agility, and relative endurance make them a good choice for emergency response wings as well. Indispensable when finding candidates on Search. These male dragons are the most sensitive of all in locating potential dragonriders. They are one of the most common dragons seen in a Weyr, and generally have widely varying personalities. Perhaps a little bit foolhardy in a flight, but often clever and dependable."

"Now, keep in mind, this is just a generalization. But it should prove handy for interacting with dragons, and knowing a bit more about your future partner. So..." He tapped the silhouette on the board. "What color dragon am I describing? Of course, any with any questions about this type of dragon, or who have anything to share... Please feel free to speak up too!"

D'suraan dragged her self from bed at valenths call. When she reached her desk a jaw craking yawn broke from her. She barely heard the invite to fly with the gree, but she shook herself awake as M'ari described the characteristics of what sounded like a green before he said male. Browns would not be the answer. The tended to be less flexible than a blue and while one had searched her, she knew there was another color famous for finding candidates.
Emergency wing? Wasn't the leader a blue?
Slowly she raised her hand unsure like.

It was a nice warm day for the season, perhaps unseasonably so, and the skies were clear with no threat of rain. It left him wanting to laze in the sun, and his two flits seemed to share the sentiment. They had eaten their breakfast meal, then gone out to one of the ledges overlooking the Weyrbowl - a low ledge, accessable by carved stairways, as the higher ones would require wings to reach. Then they had settled down in a patch of sun to bake on the rocks - Ari stripping down to near nothing and rubbing sun-oil into his skin first. It was a good day for sunbathing...

When Valenth's voice reached him, the youth heaved a sigh. He considered, for a moment, skipping the lesson to nap in the sun... But what if his candidacy was revoked, for skipping lessons? He frowned to himself then pushed up with another sigh. "Fine, fine..." He snatched up his clothing and reluctantly pulled it on, already missing the warmth of the stone beneath his back and the sun on his skin. Paragon looked up at him with a lazy blink of one eye, and Verity offered a small, warbling chirp - couldn't their human stay and enjoy the sun? "Don't let me keep you from it. I'll be back, after."

Once they were bid farewell, the youth made his way to the classroom and found himself a seat toward the back. He offered their teacher a wave in greeting, then sighed and leaned back, intending to relax through the class session. He listened to their instructor's lesson, considering the answers. He had been searched by a blue dragon, and all of those searchriders he knew of, the ones he saw escorting candidates into the hall now and then, had seemed to be blueriders. Still... someone else would offer up an answer, right? He didn't want to raise his hand...

"Need another hint? These dragons bond to people of both sexes equally, but that is actually a recent change. Would it surprise you to know that for much of our recorded history, only male candidates were considered appropriate and presented to these dragons in number? It was thought impossible for a woman to impress one. You only begin to find real record of those traditions changing across Pern back as recently as the last Pass..." He looked around at the women and girls in his classroom for emphasis. "It is a good example of something taken for granted as a dragons natural behavior, when it reality it is just the influence of Weyrfolk."

When he saw D'suraan raise her hand, M'ari pointed her way. "So what type of dragon do you think I was describing? And you needn't raise your hand. Feel free to just call it out. We're all friends here, no?" He grinned at the red-headed girl.

Leaning back in the chair Solen watched those gathered absently. For now he was content to let others do the answering though he did side eye Rodeo with a slightly amused look. Giving the small fair a gentle mental nudge he sent all but warden out to seek entertainment by doing their best to entice Valenth to play with them.

Giving the stubborn bronze's head a light rub he shifted back to absently listening again.

Ari woke with a start, looking about with tired eyes for the source of the call, Empress mirroring her agitation by flitting about in concerned fashion. It took all of a few moments before she realized her mistake, giggling quietly. Time away from the Weyr had her forgetting Valenth's voice, if only just. After rising and dressing, she headed off to class, Empress returning to her perch with steely eyes watching Berg, still asleep.

The reality of how long she'd been away struck her as she entered the room. There were a few candidates she remembered, but even more she'd never met. Once more, it was time to listen for names; she ought not forget a single one!

M'ari's question had her grinning, even before it had been fully asked. Well, what else could it be but a wonderful blue such as Peth? She'd have to dote on him some other time, S'ind couldn't possibly have said enough while she was away. So sure she was of the answer, she refrained from voicing it, leaving it to D'suraan to solve.

Taryn sat in the class room, excitedly listening and taking in the information as M'ari went over it. In his head, he imagined the blue dragon that had searched him. He knew that blues were smaller, but not smaller than greens. They were certainly the most common male dragons just by pure nature of color hierarchy.

Blue, blue, blue... He chanted in his head, waiting for the teacher to give the answer.

Leristed arrived when he was supposed to arrive. Quietly taking a seat in the back of the classroom so he had full view of the room. He liked to have things in his sight, he liked to maintain a wide view, so he would never be caught unawares.

Leristen considered the candidatemaster's quiz question, thought about the dragon that brought him there, and guessed without much reference as to the details M'ari alluded to. He didn't speak his guess aloud, nor did he mind if he got it wrong. He was there to learn, afterall.

"Spot on, D'suraan!" M'ari congratulated the girl with a smile and a snap of his fingers, pleased that a younger student had decided to speak up. He recognized that it could be hard to speak in class, especially when one faced the possibility of being wrong in front of their peers. There were definitely a lot of newer faces in his class with the Hatching nearing, and he hoped to easy any anxiety about performing in lessons. He turned to quickly scribble in a bit of the silhouette with a blue colored piece of chalk. "Blue dragons are fast, durable, and Search sensitive. Many of the eggs at this next Hatching will hatch blue, and its likely that a good portion of you will find your partner in one."

"How about this next one?" He drew another silhouette, and spoke as he did so. "One color of dragon is known for its stolid dependability, and it sometimes referred to as the backbone of the fighting wing. They're larger than blues, but not as fast. They can breathe a more widespread and sustained flame however, and can fly an entire fall. Generally they have good sense and often hold the position of Wingsecond or Wingthird for their ability to reliably lead and convey information. Their endurance and steady natures also make them ideal dragons for Sweepriding, as they can spend long periods of time in the air at an even pace. These dragons impress to both men and women, though the latter is another example of changing ideas in the Weyrs. In some Weyrs, it's still changing."

It is the dragon who decides who is worthy of them. Valenth offered the classroom, apparently listening in.

"Exactly." He grinned, and looked over his students to meet their gazes one by one if he could. "It's the Searchdragons who can tell if you have potential, and its not for me or even the Weyrwoman to say which dragon you will Impress to and which you wont." He chuckled, and ran a hand through his hair before continuing. "To prove my point... I know many of you are relatively new to D'Sanctine, but I'm sure that some of you have heard of our resident Weyrswain? A young man named R'eme bonded to our Junior Queen, Sombreth, who was hatched with a black hide that sparkles gold. As far as anyone can prove, she is the first Obsidian dragon on Pern, and this is the first time a Queen has chosen a man. Like women blue riders in the past... Impossible! Until it wasn't. In fact, there is much to see in our weyr that was previously thought impossible..."

"But I've gotten off track. The dragons I am speaking of chase all varieties of female dragons, and have even been known to sometimes catch Queen dragons, and in rare cases a few of their riders have even become Weyrleaders. What color dragon am I describing? Just call out if you know the answer. Can anyone go the extra mile name a few resident dragonpairs of this color?" The Candidatemaster looked around the room, gauging his students expressions.

Taryn, having been weyrfolk since D'Sanctine had been founded, knew a good number of the riders here, mostly by reputation than actual interaction.

He thought he knew the answer..."Brown?" He asked, a little demurely. "Assistant weyrlingmaster, V'ren and Brown Jazzeth, then there's D'al and Kiteth, the new weyrling pair J'lor and Sabath...and then the two that passed away in the threadfall...U'ro and Baconath..." At the mention of U'ro, Taryn's volume decreased, as if he was somehow disrespecting the brownpair by bringing them up. "I think there are more, but those are the ones I remember."

She sat in her desk confused. Valenth's input did not help, there were several dragons who decided if you were worthy of them or not. Her thoughts were stuck on bronze or brown. Since she could not pock which one, she was glad when another candidate spoke up.

M'ari gestured at Tayrn as he started speaking, and nodded in approval. At the mention of the deceased brown weyrlings, he offered the young man a sympathetic look. "That's fine. You named quite a few. I was speaking of brown dragons. I'm told that they're fine partners to have, and should any of you Impress to one you'll be able to soar as high as you're willing to work for." The Candidatemaster turned to fill in that silhouette with a beige colored chalk, and began drawing a new one.

"The next dragon I'll speak of is one of the rarer colors. Records of Hatchings past suggest that this type of dragon is one of two colors that occur more often at the approach of and during a Pass than they do at in interval. In fact, the sight of this type of dragon hatching first among a clutch of eggs is considered to be a sign of good luck." The green-rider paused here to grin at his students, already seeing the answer in some of their eyes. "They possess the largest spread flame of any type of dragon, and while not capable of the speed of smaller dragons, they have the greatest endurance of any you'll find in an average Wing. They generally have ambitious, proud, powerful personalities, and are known to often see each other as rivals especially upon reaching adulthood. Each has a natural talent for leadership among their brothers and sisters, and they along with their riders are most commonly made Wingleaders of individual fighting wings. In addition, these types of dragons are the most common suitors who rise after a Queen, and when successful result in a new Weyrleader."

He paused here to tap the empty drawing thoughtfully, and added. "The records tell us that this type of dragon tends to impress to male candidates over all others, and some Weyrfolk might tell you that they only ever choose men. But it's not as simple as that. D'Sanctine Weyr alone has two female riders who successfully Impressed to this type of dragon, one of which occurred just this turn on our own hatching sands."

"So which color am I speaking of? Can anyone name some of the dragonpairs living here at the Weyr?" He winked at his students, and crossed his arms. "At the very least, all of you should be able to name one!"

The answer to the question was not a difficult one. Leristen could decide purely based off order of elimination. Bronze. That was the answer. He remained quiet though, he wasn't one to draw attention to himself, it went against his instincts to do so.

He calmly sat and watched to see if any of the other candidates would answer the question.

Valenth's summons never failed to rouse Kaeli, who was always too excited to see the green dragon and attend the lessons she hoped would someday aid her as a dragonrider. She was already dressed and up, being the early-rising sort, so it was no issue at all for her to leave her room and thread her way through the barracks to reach the classroom. She would have rathered it take place outside, especially if the day was as nice as Valenth said, but it was not her choice.

She took a seat at random, though the thought of flying on Valenth's back had her looking like she might at any moment make a run for it. She hated anything resembling a lecture, any class that was not hands-on, though she tried her best to pay attention. It just was not as fun if the teacher was droning on and on, even if the subject was fascinating. Why listen to theory when you could go see the proof?

However, all things considered, she did rather like M'ari as a teacher. He knew what was what. He knew they would rather be having fun than listening to a lecture. She appreciated that, and she was sure other candidates did as well. She sat forward, propping her chin on one hand as she watched him, trying to keep the dull look from her face.

Of course, she rather thought he was talking about blue dragons. They were excellent, of course. All dragons were. But did she have any interest in them, for her personally? ...Well, she couldn't tell herself no, because she thought any dragon would be amazing, though she hoped for a green with the same love for adventure she had. Before she knew it, she was drifting off into some daydream about riding a green of her own.

She spaced out through the discussion of brown dragons, her attention slowly coming back in towards the end of the next type. She stared at the drawn silhouette, letting the thoughts slowly trickle back in, before she blinked at the board and then M'ari. "Bronze," she finally spoke up, then shrugged her shoulders. "Like Teneth and Weyrleader T'yl. I like Teneth. He's very friendly."

As embarrassing as it might be to someone, Tikali didn't much care that he was late to the lesson as long as he got there at all. He skidded into the classroom halfway through M'ari's discussion of browns, looking like he'd just fallen from bed, and hurried into a seat. He sank down, scrubbed his fingers through his curls, stifled a yawn.

When Taryn mentioned browns and some of the known pairs he perked up, looking around before he focused his attention on the board at the front of the class. Of course, brown caught his attention better than anything could, and he leaned forward eagerly. Even when M'ari started talking about bronzes--it was so obvious!--his attention didn't waver, though he couldn't stop bouncing one knee.

Maybe after the lesson he'd find food. He'd missed breakfast entirely, and learning was hungry work, and then he could bug Valenth or something!

"Just like Teneth and Weyrleader T'yl." M'ari agreed with Kaeli, beaming at her with approval. He colored in the silhouette with an orange stick of chalk, and drew another. "Now lets talk about the rarest of all dragons that are found throughout Pern." He paused here, and added with a bit of a shrug. "And by that, I don't mean our strangely colored friends unique to our Weyr. I honestly wish I could tell you more about those fellows, but the fact is no one knows. Maybe by the next interval, there will be Quartz, Amethyst, Ruby, Silver, and Obsidian dragons galore. Who knows?"

"But the dragon I'm talking about is Gold, of course." A bright yellow soon filled in the dragon he had drawn. "They are almost always only found one to a clutch, and are the only dragon that can be accurately predicted from the golden color and large size of the egg. They are the largest, strongest, and some would argue most intelligent dragons alive on Pern. All other dragons bow before them, and they have the power to compel their smaller brothers and sisters. Some say that all dragons need a queen, and the beasts of a Queenless Weyr soon begin to sicken."

"Until.. ah, recent events here at D'Sanctine they were the only dragons capable of laying eggs." He chuckled at this, and held up his hands in a helpless gesture. "I'm sure it is not something that has endeared us to the other Weyrs, but in life not all look favorably on change. The very first dragon that was said to ever crack its shell was a gold, the same Faranth who's name is still on all our tongues today. There were a few periods of time when women candidates were only actively Searched when there were gold eggs on the sands, and to this day gold's bond very nearly exclusively to women. With ah, the exception of our Weyrswain."

"Golds are the most territorial of all dragons. Because of that, generally a Weyr has only about three to four Queen dragons at most. Its a sign of luck and wealth to have many Queens, but too many can cause tensions. When approaching or in flight, Queens get increasingly territorial about the local brown and bronze males." His face became a little more serious. The Candidatemaster didn't know if any of his candidates in this class would impress gold, certainly there was no gold egg currently on the sands. But there were always future hatchings to consider. "When one Queen rises, all other Goldriders must quickly get their beasts between and away. The sight of one Gold dragon rising can induce an early rise in another Gold. There are a few infamous records of two competing Queen dragons fighting to the death because they rose to mate at the same time."

"But, enough about Golds!" He dismissed the topic with a wave of his hand when he realized he'd gotten a bit dark. There was already so much sadness in the world, he saw no reason to bring it into his classroom today. "Let us talk about the very best sort of dragon there is, hm?" He shot them a wink, and drew another dragon, significantly larger than all the others. With a quick movement the drawing soon bore bold stripes of bright green. "Green dragons! Green dragons-"

Want to have fun with Candidates! Valenth interrupted as she nosed open the door to the classroom to the outside with a small shove of her nose. The broad handle of the door gleamed wetly and bore a few sticky ropes of saliva where the green had apparently figured out how to eventually open it with her tongue. She poked her broad head into the classroom curiously, and when she met M'ari's eyes she shifted her weight from foot to foot outside. Her whirling blue green eyes calmed slightly, and she sounded slightly abashed at her own behavior when she asked. ... If lessons are over?

M'ari stared at Valenth with one eyebrow raised and mouth slightly open. Finally he shook his head and grinned, and made a dismissive gesture with one hand. "Lesson's are over. Go on, my friends. I'm sure Valenth will be happy to teach any who wish to learn all about green dragons."
